Surface Design
explore surface decoration techniques like sgraffito, slip trailing, inlay, transfers, and resist glazing while bringing more depth and personality to your pottery.
$368.00
Explore a wide range of surface decoration techniques while building more depth, intention, and personality into your ceramic work. Each week focuses on a different approach to surface design, including slip trailing, sgraffito, inlay, water etching, underglaze transfers, screen printing, and tape and resist glazing techniques. Students will also explore key design principles such as color theory, composition, balance, and contrast to support stronger creative decisions.
All materials, including slips, underglazes, and tools, are provided. Practice tiles, coasters, and simple forms such as slab plates and cups will be available throughout the six weeks for experimentation and skill-building.
Best suited for students with some wheel throwing or hand-building experience, the focus is primarily on surface decoration rather than form-building. Potters of any skill level are welcome to explore these techniques, though only minimal guidance will be provided on wheel throwing or hand-building.
Schedule: workshop meets on the scheduled day and for the following five weeks at the same day and time. Each session is 2.5 hours, for a total of 15 hours of studio time.
